Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story
On Monday, November 26, 1990 at the Misericordia Hospital, Arthur DeVilliers, aged 77 years, beloved husband of Eileen De Villiers.
Arthur was born in Stoughton, Sask. and moved to Brandon, Man. at an early age, and then to Winnipeg. In 1939 he enlisted with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and was held as a P.O.W. for four years. Following his discharge he was employed with the CNR until his retirement in 1973. He was a member of the Hong Kong Veterans Association and a member of the Fort Rouge Branch No. 97 of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Surviving him besides his wife Eileen is his son Norman Smeall of Winnipeg; his three daughters, Yvonne Domok and husband Peter of Winnipeg, Maureen Sheane and husband John of Calgary and Mary-Anne McCulloch and husband Richard of Winnipeg; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Should friends so desire donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 29 at St. Albans Anglican Church, 486 Rathgar Street with Rev. J. D. Njegovan officiating. Interment in Military Section at Brookside Cemetery.
