Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Ralph Elwood St. John, 55, a prisoner of war of the Japanese in World War II, died Tuesday in his Birkdale Rd. home in Scarborough.
Born in Streetsville, he was one of six brothers in the Canadian forces when he enlisted in Toronto with the Royal Rifles of Canada in 1941.
St. John survived more than four years of captivity. But he never completely recovered from years of inadequate diet.
He leaves his wife, Jane Evelyn, and son, Ralph Wilfred. A funeral will be held in the Ogden Funeral Chapel on Sheppard Ave. E. at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Ralph St. John, beloved husband of Jane Evelyn (nee Butler). Loving father of Ralph Wilfred St. John. Dear brother of Winnie (Mrs. George Mattison), Reg, Eric, Fred, Bill, Marilyn (Mrs. Harry Stevens), Doug and Amos. Pre-deceased by brothers George and Kenneth. Resting at the Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Ave. E., Agincourt (near Midland Ave.). For funeral service in the chapel, Friday 2 p.m. Interment Pine Hills Cemetery. Flowers to the Chapel or donations to the Hong Kong Veterans Association would be appreciated.
