Gander Dedication
On July 23, 2015, at Gander, NL, Their Honours Lieutenant-Governor Frank F. Fagan and Patricia Fagan of Newfoundland and Labrador unveiled a statue of the Newfoundland Dog, Sgt. Gander, the mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada, along with a statue of his soldier handler. The unveiling was assisted by Mr. Philip Doddridge of the Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association.

The memorial to Sergeant Gander was born of a school reunion held in Gander in 2010 and is a gift to the children of Gander from the early students of Gander (1951 to 1964).

Both Sgt. Gander and his soldier handler are the work of Sculptor, Morgan MacDonald. The sculptures are larger than life and are accompanied by an Interpretation Panel outlining “Gander’s” life story. Note Sgt. Gander’s collar with his rank and stripes together with his “Dickin” medal.

The project was supported by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and private donors.
