SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1Print of a pen and ink sketch of

"Sgt. Gander and his brave actions"

by Charles Frederick Lalonde (formerly of the Royal Canadian Navy).

The original, signed with Freddie's monogram "C.F.L.", was commissioned by Ron McGuire (ON) in 2001 to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Defence of Hong Kong and the significant involvement by Canada's "C" Force.

The sketch recognizes, "Sgt." Gander, one of the many Newfoundland and Canadian heroes of that battle. The Newfoundland breed dog was the mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada.

"Sgt." Gander was awarded the Dickin Medal for his part in the battle on 27th October 2000 at the British High Commissioner's residence: in Ottawa.

At that time, Gander was one of fifty-five animals to receive "the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross" and the only Canadian or Newfoundland animal to be so honoured. Other such “heros” have since been awarded this honour.
