Faded Glory

Faded glory
Old medals resting on his chest
Tarnished reminders
Of a young man at his best

Called upon to serve
In distant lands unknown
For king and for country
No mercy to be shown

Duty calls
Fears he must cast aside
There is no place to run to
Nowhere he can hide

So to the battlefield
He marches head held high
His heart pounding like thunder
As darkness fills the sky

A young boy’s dreams
A man’s despair
Entwined like barbed wire seen
Sprawled across his hidden lair

Faded glory
Old wounds still not healed
Though he survived the hell
Of war on a bloodstained field

For memories linger
Where red flowers bloom
And silent guns still echo
The dreaded march of doom
