† Com. Arthur Gomes, MBE

We were all saddened to hear of the passing of Arthur Gomes of the HKVDC who resided in Hong Kong. He always greeted the pilgrimages to renew acquaintances and meet new members of families and friends of the Canadian Hong Kong Veterans.  He was a wonderful resource to all of us when seeking the Battle of Hong Kong story.

Arthur was the editor of the Hong Kong POW Association’s newsletter that had a worldwide circulation and contained interesting quotations i.e. “It is not enough to have a good mind. The main thing is to use it well” – Edmund Burke.

Dr. Judy Maxwell, BC HKVCA member, sent me this item after notifying us of Arthur’s passing – ‘I am just reviewing a one-on-one interview with Arthur, one of the last. In it I asked him, "What do you think of the Canadian participation in the Battle of Hong Kong?" and he said, "Well, they were a very important factor in the morale of the whole Far East, because they represented the New World coming to the help of the Old World."

How's that for eloquent? These words -- from the mouth of a Second World War Hong Kong Volunteer, POW, and icon -- quantify the existence of the HKCVA?’

Our Association has extended our sympathy to Arthur’s family as we share their grief.

Our thoughts and prayers are extended to all the families and friends as we share in your grief.

 We will remember them.
