HKVCA President's Message

It seems that winter has been with us forever but there are slight changes in our area so hopefully spring will be here soon however as the temperature rises the snow comes. Oh well we need to be optimistic and will welcome the green grass when it shows.

As you will have noticed the Editor of this newsletter has changed. This change was due to some health issues that I experienced a couple of months ago. My situation has improved and I am hoping with medication I will be close to my normal. But it was apparent that I needed to downside my activities. So when I informed the Board of Directors and an email was sent to our members, I was very pleased to have Sheila Forsyth make the offer of becoming the Editor. Thank you so much Sheila, I know this important communication to our members is in good hands.

I will continue as President until the upcoming elections but will not run again. It has been an honour and pleasure to serve you along with the members on the Board in our efforts for the veterans and widows and for the awareness of the Battle of Hong Kong.

RE: the Memorial Wall corrections - we received a phone call from Ryan Olshansky, assistant to the Minister of VAC that the Minister has signed off on our request for $25,000 for the Wall repairs. He is unsure of the logistics of our receipt of the money but it was good to hear that it is coming soon. So hopefully it will be before spring when we hope to begin the work.

There have been several changes made to our bylaws as a result of the enactment to the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act (“CNCA”). This means there will be annual elections held. I am asking that you give this serious thought and if you have a few hours a month to volunteer for the executive in your Region or Nationally we would be happy to welcome you. You may also consider a project like education, which is an important part of our mandate. There have been a few people doing the work for a couple of decades now and we appreciate their efforts but with new people come new ideas and suggestions that can refresh the direction and enhance this Association. Please consider this thought.

Please enjoy your family and friends as we only come this way once. All the best from my family to yours.

Carol
