It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alvin Zaharychuk of the Arran District on May 24th, 2011. Alvin was born in the Beaver Plain School district to Anton and Anastasia (nee Orobko) on August 19th, 1917. He joined the army and spent 4 years in Hong Kong as a prisoner of war. Upon his return to Canada, he moved to Stenen when his parents bought the King George Hotel. There he met and married Anne Slapinski in 1947. Alvin was appointed postmaster and kept this position (Stenen/ Invermay) till his retirement. Alvin was very involved in the community, serving on numerous boards, Village Council and the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Alvin will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Alvin is predeceased by his parents: Anton and Anastasia Zaharychuk; his wife Anne in 1993; his brothers: John, Dan, Mike, Julian and William and his sister Lydia. Alvin will be lovingly remembered by his son: Cliff (Flo) and his daughter: Sharon (Jo); his brother Walter (Mari) and his sister Mary.

He volunteered in the Canadian Armed Forces on July 1, 1940 joining the Princess Patricia Regiment. After completing basic training in Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg he took a special course in signaling in Kingston, On. After completion he joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers and was posted in Hong Kong. In October 1941 he left Winnipeg to Vancouver where he boarded a ship and sailed to Hong Kong arriving 2 weeks later.
