Born Charles Douglas Grant Johnston in Quebec city on 23 November 1909; graduated with a BA from McGill and a law degree from Laval; excelled in rackets sports and golf; served as a lieutenant in the Royal Rifles of Canada during the Second World War; practised law in his home city; was an artist and an avid gardener; died in Quebec on 27 October 1989 (within a month of his 80th birthday).
