Donald MacPherson
Gratitude is knowing someone risked their life for you.
I see people choosing their life paths
I hear children having fun in the parks
I smell the next warm meal on the table
I touch my family’s hands, knowing they are safe
I taste freedom from Donald MacPherson
Donald MacPherson, you were born May 9, 1920
On a farm in Miniota, Manitoba
Nobody to keep you company but 2 brothers and 6 sisters.
After truck driving for your pa, you were enlisted then recruited.
Later on, into Winnipeg you drove, thinking you wouldn’t be marching.
Days later, you were marching, marching into training,
Marching into a battle to become a prisoner of war.
After guarding prisoners of war in Jamaica, you became one in Hong Kong.
Courtesy didn’t exist, only starvation and unfairness.
Personal determination, you said, kept you alive,
How hard it must have been to do that for 3 ˝ years.
Earned your money, you did, in a nickel mine, morn till night, 7 days a week.
Rewards you did receive for your suffering.
Some would think it would be in silver and gold
Oh, but how they were wrong.
Nope, yours and our reward was freedom, thanks to you!
Donald MacPherson was a brave man in WWII.
Who feels he did his duty for his country.
Who needs to know that his friends and family are safe.
Who wants to be at peace about what happened in the war.
Who fears war will be upon us again.
Who would like to serve his country with honor once again.
